The Revolution Interview: Michael Murolo

For readers of Inked Revolution Magazine who may be discovering your work for the first time, can you tell us about your journey into tattooing and what inspired you to become the “Respectable Person in the Industry.” you are today?

For all the readers of Inked Magazine Revolution, I would like to introduce myself.

I'm Michael Murolo from Italy and I've been working in the tattoo industry for 24 years. I graduated from the Pino Pascali State Art Institute of Bari. Coming from an artistic school background, I have always been attracted to all forms of art. I began my journey in the Tattoo Industry as a Manager in various Tattoo Shops for a good nine years. I was also briefly a practicing tattoo artist and obtained a certificate of qualification to practice as a tattoo artist and piercier. For twelve years now, I have been collaborating with various tattoo conventions around the world for artistic selection, and for seven years I have also been invited as a guest judge to evaluate tattoos that take the stage during contests at tattoo conventions. I have been collaborating for two years with the prestigious Online Magazine of the World Tattoo Events @world.tattoo.events brand and am sponsored at the tattoo conventions where I take part by Dgn Tattoo Mag @dgntattoomag .

I currently collaborate and am part of the artistic selection staff and jury corps of International Caserta Tattoo Convention @caserta.tattoo.convention, Naples Tattoo Art International @napolitattooartinternational, Halloween Tattoo Expo @halloweentattooexpo and Padova Ink Show @padovainkshow .

Your name has become well-known throughout the international tattoo community, from conventions and judging panels to creating award-winning artwork. Looking back, what have been some of the defining moments in your career?

So say tattoo artists and colleagues in my industry that I've become famous :) but I don't think I am and I wouldn't want to be, I always keep a low, humble profile. Looking back into my past, every moment of my career has been important because I've found and met people who have given me the opportunity to get involved, collaborate with them, and bet on me.I am grateful to all the people who saw potential in me and who gave me the opportunity to collaborate over the years of my career. Obviously, whoever bet on me never told me how to proceed or how to do it for the best success of a project. I experienced, wrong. As we all know, mistakes improve me and a defeat rekindles me. As I think each of us has our dreams in the drawer, I had some and I have more to make come true. I can say now that looking back at my past, the long apprenticeship I've had, the training and the desire to get involved and make myself known, every step has been important from every point of view. Tattoo conventions are events where every visitor can admire many artists of all tattoo styles from all over the world. Many aspects need to be evaluated so that it can be said that that tattoo convention is important and with great tattoo artists from all over the world.

Tattoo conventions play a major role in bringing artists together from around the world. As someone deeply involved in this scene, what do you believe makes a great tattoo convention, both for artists and attendees?

First of all, every tattoo convention, I think from my humble point of view, must have a good organizational staff, prepared and trained on the work that a tattoo convention entails from start to finish. The choice of artists to select and invite I think is very important. I think and believe that every organizer or art selector like me must have knowledge about all the tattoo styles that are important to me, the pioneers and legends of that tattoo style. Obviously some artistic choices are made for different points of view: organizational bugs, personal artistic taste and other different strategies that I won't mention here because they are tricks of the trade :) . Since the beginning of my career for tattoo conventions I have always valued and engaged new tattooing talent by making a careful selection for each tattoo style.

The tattoo industry has evolved tremendously over the years. What changes have you witnessed firsthand, and where do you see the future of tattooing heading in the next decade?

The tattoo industry is evolving very quickly day by day, and I think you have to be careful about everything that happens to be up to date.

Over the years I have witnessed so many changes in every respect that I am not going to quote here or I would go on too long. Assuming I have an old-school mentality, I too adapt to the present and the future. I hope to see future improvements in the industry and always meet people who are knowledgeable and put a lot of passion and determination into every aspect of this beautiful industry called Tattoo Industry.

I want to remember the event for all the artists from all over the world and for the readers of Ink Revolution Magazine of the 11th edition of International Caserta Tattoo Convention @caserta.tattoo.convention, one of the most beautiful and prestigious events in southern Italy near Naples which every year welcomes 400 tattoo artists from all over the world, To which I am part of the artistic selection staff and the jury corps that will take place next year on the dates of 9-10-11 April 2027 at the A1 Expo Exhibition Centre in Caserta near Naples-Italy.
